Circularity
In the UK, 22 million pieces of furniture are tossed away every year, most of which sadly goes directly to landfill. By going circular we can keep furniture in our homes longer.
We want to encourage a reuse, repair and recycle approach over the more common consume and discard practice.
Some of the ways in which we do this:
- We believe that for-profit companies can help drive positive change, that's why every month we donate 2% of our revenue to a different charity which we believe is creating a positive impact to the earth.
- We allow furniture to stay within a circular system. The pieces we sell are Zenkki Certified which means that they are hand picked to be durable and able to last many years.
- We restore and repair pieces to their former glory when needed. For example by fixing small scratches or repairing or exchanging spare parts on the furniture.
- We use eco-friendly materials for wrapping furniture and as re-use materials which would of otherwise been thrown away (such as bubble wrap, boxes etc). Some of our suppliers may use plastic to package their products and rather than throw it away, we try to reuse it and try to encourage them to change their materials. We also accept and take back our customers excess packaging whenever possible.
-
More widely, we write about and promote local and international circular and environmental initiatives and other companies who are trying to make a difference.
- When choosing furniture partners we only pick pieces designed to last as well as take our partners environmental credentials into consideration. For example:
HÅG designs take into account low weight, fewer components, better choice of materials, longer lifespan and a design that is suitable for disassembly. Their products are easily repaired, cleaned, reused and recycled.
Swyft make their frames from FSC certified timber and support the organisation "Trees for Cities". The plastic they use in their packaging is biodegradable and they aim to be carbon neutral. Their furniture is easily repaired, cleaned, reused and recycled.
Woodman only use locally sourced, GSC certified wood. Their items are often, at least in part, made from solid wood which means they are likely to last much longer than flat pack furniture made of for example MDF.
Oakywood use ECO friendly materials, FSC certified wood and partner with "One Tree Planted", a non profit organisation which has planted more than 25,000 trees .
Anglepoise creates iconic, durable and well engineered lamps which stand the test of time and are known to last many decades after purchase.
